
The Comptroller’s Office has a staff of approximately 120. He had daily operational responsibility for the agency that has statewide payroll management, accounting, financial reporting, single audit oversight, enterprise system security access control and enterprise-wide training on state finance law responsibilities. Jeffrey served as the Commonwealth’s first deputy comptroller for the past three comptrollers. Jeffrey understands the unique role played by the OIG to foster faith in government by working to reduce and eliminate the misuse of public dollars and assets at the state and municipal level. He is a collaborative and results-oriented executive who welcomes new ideas. He is known as a fair and open-minded public administrator who leads by example. Inspector General Shapiro has served as a dedicated public servant for over 30 years. Jeffrey is the Commonwealth’s fifth inspector general. The Massachusetts Office of the Inspector General (OIG), established in 1981, was the first-state level inspector general’s office in the nation. Shapiro was appointed Inspector General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by Governor Baker, Attorney General Healey and Auditor Bump on September 2, 2022, and was sworn-in for a five-year term on October 3, 2022.
