For the signature assignment, I am incorporating my twelve-page paper describing and explaining Confucius's view of reality called holism, through the concepts of Tao, chung-yung, te, li, chun-tzu, and jen. My favorite philosophies throughout this course were Plato's Allegory of the Cave, and Søren Kierkegaard's Leap to Faith argument saying that belief in God and romantic love necessarily includes a "leap" of faith on our part. I also thought there would be more religious arguments earlier on, but the second half of the course was more dedicated to those types of philosophical arguments.Ĭhallenges I faced within this course were fully comprehending the various arguments, and setting aside any disbelief or willed ignorance to give each argument its chance to fully explain itself and its value in the modern day to me. Thankfully, the gregarious and quite hilarious professor in this course was able to simplify arguments that we weren't quite understanding at first so that the course was not as hard as I imagined it being. My thoughts going into the course were that it would probably be an exciting, but also intellectually demanding course to take.
I knew that this course would help me to whittle down my previously held beliefs to have a stronger foundation of what I believe, and of how to justify it through philosophical arguments. Reasons I chose Philosophy over any other applicable course, were that I had gotten a taste of Philosophy in my previous World Religions course and that I genuinely was excited to learn about world-renowned philosophers and their arguments for myself.
To satisfy the depth requirement in Humanities for my degree, I took Philosophy 1000: Introduction to Philosophy during the Fall Semester of 2017.
